What To Do If Your Kindle Won T Turn On – Like any piece of technology, your Kindle can misbehave from time to time. This probably won’t happen often (or at all), but if it does, a so-called program reset or reset (basically turning your Kindle off and back on) can solve many problems.

But if that doesn’t work, or if you’re giving away or trading in your Kindle and want to wipe it completely, you’ll want to do a hard reset. This is sometimes known as a “factory reset,” which erases all traces of your Amazon account information and returns it to its original settings.

Need to reset your Kindle to troubleshoot or fix a problem? Just press and hold the power button until you see the power menu appear, then tap Restart.

Like most battery-powered electronics, it’s a good idea to charge the battery from time to time, even if you’re not using the device. So if you have an unused Kindle sitting in a drawer right now, you might want to charge the battery, as it will slowly die if left uncharged for too long.

If you have a Kindle with a dead battery that will no longer hold a charge, the best way to get rid of it is to trade it in for a new Kindle. Amazon will give you a $5 credit for a broken Kindle, plus 20% off the price of a new one.

That said, there are times when the Kindle won’t charge after the battery dies. In most cases, you can bring it back to life relatively easily. Here’s how.

If your Kindle shows a critical battery message or the low battery icon, or if it’s so low the screen won’t show anything, plug it into a power outlet and let it charge for at least half an hour before trying the device again.

If your Kindle still won’t charge, you should first try the power cord on another device and try plugging something else into the outlet to make sure the problem isn’t with either of them.

Try resetting your Kindle by holding down the power button for at least 20 seconds. Turn it back on and see if it charges normally. If it still won’t charge, let it sit for about half an hour while connected to power, then try the reset again.
