Not only that, fog simplifies the scene, allowing you to focus the viewer’s attention on just one subject or group of subjects.

In the image above, for example, notice how the fog helps mask the chaos of the forest. In its place, there’s a nice, clean palette on which the linear shape of the tree trunk can shine.

The large mountain in the background would be too dark for a black and white version of this shot, so taking this photo when fog filled the valley helped this photographer create a more balanced black and white image.

Not only that, but you can see how the fog adds a fluid visual element to the photo that contrasts beautifully with the trees and mountains.

But sometimes you come across a landscape that has some potential for a fun photo, but may be lacking in the visual interest department.

If there’s a lack of trees, color, lines, or other elements that traditionally provide interest, you can extend the exposure to make the image more interesting by blurring the clouds or water.

But using a long exposure, the gorgeous blur of clouds and water makes this a much more interesting photo.

There are many rules of composition like the rule of thirds and concentric structures, but I think there is more to it than just these rules.

Simple, Yet Impactful Landscape Photography Tips

Landscape photography is about perception, it is about how we can portray nature in our own way. Obviously following the rules will give us a good image but breaking them will give us an interesting and different image. Rules aside, I’ve experimented a lot with composition while shooting landscapes.

Give the frame some time without the camera. Whenever I arrive at a shoot location, I always take out my phone and scan the entire area with its camera. I check for different elements that I can frame and spend some time behind.

In this example of tumbling in the Singalila Range, it was the horses who were having a morning and the mountains in the background provided a good appreciative framing with the morning mist. The first photo is taken with my Redmi Note 5 smartphone, which I took during the preparation of the final photo.

#2. Visual Flow: Create lines (or curves) that lead to a focal point or image

Where Should I Focus When Taking A Landscape Photo

Leading lines, as they are called, help visualize the way a photo tells a story. They create a visual flow that leads us to the main subject, also known as the focal point, or towards the image and not away from it. This helps keep viewers engaged with our images and creates interest in their minds.

Here in the first photo from my hike to Tonglu, the dark tree branches and broken branches on the ground lead our eyes to the tree which is the focal point here. In another example from the hike in Neora Valery National Park, the path itself makes an S-curve and decays within the frame, creating a sense of ambiguity and curiosity about what lies where the path ends.

Layers are a very useful way to create stunning compositions. They work best in mountains but we can use layers in any type of environment where there are repetitions of similar objects leading to some focal point of the image.

The first photo is taken at Rishyap, where two layers of mountains lead us to the peak in the middle of the frame. Another example shows another example of mountain layers where the sun’s rays are falling and the mountains will lead the viewer to the image. Note how the clouds in both images work to add another layer to the composition.
