WASHINGTON — The Joint Counter-small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Office, along with the Office of Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies and industry partners, completed a four-week demonstration in June in the U.S. Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona.

The event was to test solutions for defeating small aircraft systems that are pre-programmed and require no operators after launch. The team chose to assess this emerging threat following a skills gap analysis.

This unique UAS creates additional challenges to deal with the system, said Col. Mike Parent, JCO chief of acquisitions and resources. The demonstration allows the team to explore solutions that can help the workforce close that gap.

During this event, the team worked with industry partners to develop five solutions, including laser-guided missiles and high-powered microwaves.

Each capability was tested during a demonstration against an attacking UAS from a distance of 2.5 miles or more. The systems involve one UAS weighing between 55-1, 320 pounds at low altitude and one at high altitude.

The combination of the attack aircraft and the range to engage the target proved challenging for all solutions, but the team was satisfied with the way it turned out, Parent said.

The JCO will send a report detailing the results from the demonstration later this month. The team will deliver that report and cost solutions to each branch of the U.S. military. and partner nations for further consideration.

This event was the fourth exhibition the team has held with industry partners since 2021. These events explore emerging technologies, bridge capacity gaps, inform needs and encourage innovation. Each focuses on a specific problem.

The first event, completed in collaboration with the Air Force, focused on low-impact interceptor capabilities. These autonomous aircraft track and shoot down enemy piloted UAS.

The second demonstration looked at ground-launched systems without inflight terminal guidance, while the third event featured airborne denial-of-service systems based on high-powered microwaves. These capabilities use electromagnetic pulses focused at low altitudes to destroy small airborne UAS.

After each event, a prototype solution, performance test or further development was purchased by one of the services/partners.

“The threat [of UAS] is changing,” explained Parent. “… These demonstrations are not just JCO demonstrations, they are ongoing demonstrations with all the services, allies and partners. That aligns our efforts across the services, across the DOD, with our partners and we’re really looking at what we can do to find that threat.” .. because it will continue to appear.”

The JCO is planning another protest next year. After conducting a capability gap analysis, the team will select a focus area and collaborate with industry partners as it continues to explore ways to combat the UAS threat.
