On the other hand, laptop GPUs strike a balance between power and size to ensure that your laptop is still portable and still powerful.
Conclusion A laptop GPU is a marvel of modern engineering, squeezing graphics power into a compact form factor. So, the next time you’re busy playing a video game or marveling at a high-definition video, take a moment to appreciate the smallest powerhouse possible – the laptop GPU! We’re kicking off our review of Nvidia’s RTX 30 laptop GPUs with a look at the GeForce RTX 3060, the more affordable of the three new Ampere mobile GPUs released so far. It’s a little unusual to review a laptop variant before a desktop chip, but to coincide with the laptop release cycle and the launch of AMD’s new Ryzen 5000 APUs, we’re getting the RTX 3060 alongside the RTX 3070. and RTX 3080 all at the same time.
The mobile RTX 3060 uses Nvidia’s GA106 silicon with 3840 CUDA cores, more than you’ll find in a desktop equivalent. There are different power configurations that OEMs can use, anywhere from 60 to 115 watts, which comes with a boost clock anywhere from 1283 MHz to 1703 MHz depending on the variant you get. Of course, one of the important points about this generation is that Nvidia is removing the “Max-Q” label, instead offering all the configurations from 60W (formerly Max-Q) to 115W (Max-P) in the same format. , something. We are not big fans.
The memory configuration of all RTX 3060 laptops is 6GB of GDDR6 192-bit bus, with a clock speed of 14 Gbps or 12 Gbps depending on the power level. As this is a new GPU featuring the Ampere architecture, it is built on Samsung’s 8nm process and features all the advantages of the new architecture such as 3rd-gen Tensor cores, 2nd-gen ray cores, and dual FP32 pipes.
Laptop Graphics Cards Explained
For laptops in particular, Nvidia has introduced various new technologies such as Dynamic Boost 2.0, WhisperMode 2.0 and Resizable BAR, to go along with old features such as Advanced Optimus. Although these features fall under the Nvidia Max-Q umbrella, they are not limited to low-power variants; All RTX 30 GPUs can use it. Not all of these features need to be used though by the laptop manufacturer. From what we’ve seen so far, the Dynamic Boost intake is notably higher than previous generations.
In today’s review, we will test two models of the RTX 3060 mobile GPU: one with a base power rating of 80W, and another with a base power of 115W. Note how we define “base power” here as both come with Dynamic Boost 2.0, which works automatically. This balances the load on the system during the game, and in some cases where the CPU usage is light, it can enable the RTX 3060 to run at up to 15W high. Considering it’s capable out of the box for both systems, this is how we’ll test these laptops and report the power differences in our benchmark charts.
Our RTX 3060 115-130W system today is the XMG Apex 17, a powerful beast of a system with significant cooling capacity. The internal RTX 3060 has a base clock of 1387 MHz and a boost clock of 1702 MHz, along with 14 Gbps of memory. It supports Dynamic Optimization and BAR Resizable, but not WhisperMode or Advanced Optimus.
The XMG Apex is powered by the Ryzen 7 5800H, a new Cezanne APU that has just been launched and will be reviewed in detail soon. There is also 16GB of dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory and a 17-inch 1080p 144Hz display. 1440p laptops are also starting to filter into the market now, but our test today will be 1080p. We will look to add 1440p to the mix in the future.
Nvidia Geforce Rtx 4090 Laptop Gpu Review
Our second RTX 3060 laptop is another XMG Apex 17 but equipped with an 80-95W GPU power configuration. The laptop is a slightly different model with a thinner chassis and a smaller cooler. The clock speed is 900 MHz base and 1425 MHz boost, also with 14 Gbps memory. This laptop has Dynamic Boost and WhisperMode, but not BAR refresh or Advanced Optimus. Maybe the lack of Resizable BAR is down to Intel CPU usage. There is also 16GB of dual-channel DDR4-3200 memory and a 17-inch 1080p 144Hz display.
It is interesting to see that XMG and ODM Clevo have decided to make Ryzen 5000 processors the focus of the Apex 17 series. Although in many aspects this chassis is similar, AMD’s model is much larger and has Better cooling, which allows it to run the GPU at a higher power rate for better performance. This is in contrast to previous generations where Intel always offered high end designs.
With that said, these two Apex models are the entry level options that XMG offers. The Core and Neo models top out with slim builds and premium materials.
We start with some classic games where we have a lot of comparative data, and then move on to new targets with a few different systems. Shadow of the Tomb Raider comes up first, and immediately we see good results.

There wasn’t a big difference between the power configurations of the RTX 3060 on our test computer, but it allowed the 80-95W configuration to deliver 17% more performance than the 90W power configuration of the RTX 2060. So the same power configuration here, just a more efficient performance. in addition to the new RTX 30 GPU series.
This puts the RTX 3060 slightly above the RTX 2070 Super Max-Q in our charts. On the other hand for those with systems several generations old, say a GTX 1060 6GB for example, you’re looking at over 65% better performance in the same power class.
In the Metro edition, the RTX 3060 is able to flex its muscles, especially in the 115W power configuration. In both cases, the new RTX 3060 is pretty much on par with the RTX 2070 Super in the same power rating, putting it at the top of the charts. At 80W we see 16% more performance than the RTX 2060, although this extends to a 30% delta at 115W. Plus, whether you’re upgrading from an older or lower system, the benefits are huge.
The control is very limited for laptop computers, so it shows some of the highest performance gains of the RTX 3060 in 2060 at 1080p. We achieved a 27% higher frame rate compared to 80-95W, and 21% higher than the 115W maximum configuration.
