The Next Generation Of Foldable Tech – With the recent development of foldable mobile phone screens, research on foldable electronic devices has become increasingly intensive. One very useful application of folding technology is in solar panels.

Fortunately, an international research team, including Prof. Jeon, has found the solution, in a study published in Advanced Science. They identified a promising candidate to address all these requirements: single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) films, due to their high transparency and mechanical robustness. The only problem is that SWNTs have difficulty sticking to the substrate surface when force is applied (such as bending) and require chemical doping. To overcome this problem, the scientists embedded a conducting layer into a polyimide (PI) substrate, filling in the empty spaces in the nanotubes.

To ensure maximum performance, they also “doped” the resulting material to increase its conductivity. By introducing small impurities (in this case, electrons attracted to molybdenum oxide) into the SWNT-PI nanocomposite layer, the energy required for electrons to move across the structure is much smaller, and therefore more charge can be generated for a given amount of current. .

The resulting prototype far exceeded the team’s expectations. At just 7 micrometers thick, this composite film exhibits exceptional resistance to bending, transparency of nearly 80%, and power conversion efficiency of 15.2%, the most ever achieved in a solar cell using carbon nanotube conductors! In fact, as pointed out by Prof. Jeon, “The results obtained are one of the best results reported so far for flexible solar cells, both in terms of efficiency and mechanical stability.”

With these new breakthroughs in solar power harvesting technology, we can only imagine what the next generation of solar panels will look like.

Earlier this year, mobile hardware company Honor launched its flagship foldable phone called the Magic V, but Huawei’s former sub-brand only released the phone in China. Now its second foldable phone, Magic Vs, is pegged for international availability.

“Honor Magic Vs will be our first foldable phone to debut in overseas markets and we are confident it will make a huge difference, changing the way people around the world use their smartphones,” said the company’s CEO, George Zhao.

The new flagship foldable phone has a similar premium look to the Magic V model, and also features a smartphone-like outer OLED display that measures 6.45 inches diagonally, and has the same resolution and refresh rate as before.

The Magic Vs is just 12.9 mm (0.5 in) thick when folded, and weighs 261 g (9.2 oz), which Honor says makes it the lightest foldable device in the industry.

Honor has reduced the number of components in its gearless hinge support structure from 92 to just four, and says that they have been designed to last more than 400,000 times without signs of wear, meaning the company can last for more than 10 years. Daily use is about 100 times per day.

The hinge mechanism reportedly has a gap-free fold and a tablet-like appearance without creases when opened, with an interior OLED display measuring 7.9 inches diagonal at 2,272 x 1,984 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. The phone supports 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, and features dynamic dimming and low blue light mode to reduce eye strain.

The camera array on the back consists of a 54 MP main camera based on Sony’s IMX800 image sensor, a 50 MP ultra-wide/macro camera, and an 8 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. Honor promises best-in-class computational photography thanks to its AI imaging engine, 4K UHD video recording is possible, and optical image stabilization is available. The imaging party is equipped with a 16 MP selfie camera on the front.
