Ice Maker Water Line Shut Off Valve – I moved into my new apartment to find that the water dispenser in the fridge is not working. I quickly diagnosed the problem by moving the refrigerator away from the wall and discovered that there is a water line coming out of the wall with a shutoff valve at the end, but it is not connected to the refrigerator. A quick try convinced me that I can’t directly connect the free male end of the shut-off valve with the male end I found on the back of the fridge. The problem seemed pretty standard, as I found many online vendors selling an “ice machine supply line” with female compression ends that seemed to do the job.

When this part arrived I was able to connect it to the fridge with minimal problems, but it would not connect to the shut off valve no matter how hard I tried. I eventually discovered that although the nut appears to be the correct female counterpart to the male thread on the free end of the shut-off valve and is almost a correct fit, it is not. In fact, the two sides of the shut-off valve are not equivalent, with the side connected to the water line coming from the wall being the correct counterpart to the female ends of the “ice machine supply line” that I ordered. So it looks like I need to get an adapter to go between the two, but it would help to know exactly what I’m looking for, since I can’t take the shutoff valve with me to the hardware store. Can someone help me identify the type of thread I’m looking for? What measurements do I need to measure to confirm the identification?

The other end is 1/8″ NPT (National Pipe Thread). NPT fittings seal with the taper of the thread (with Teflon tape or pipe thread for ease) and are completely incompatible with other types of threaded fittings.

You will probably need an adapter to attach the valve to the “male end… on the back of the fridge”. If you post a picture of that end we might be able to tell you what type of adapter you need.

As @jimmy Fix-it said, I would just replace the valve or you could go to the “big box store” and ask for a 1/8″ or a 1/4″ female X 1/4 OD compression fitting. These are a standard fitment and easy to purchase. The end of the valve looks to be 1/4″ male thread. Make sure you have some type of pipedope on the threads. I highly recommend just buying an ice machine hose kit. Would definitely do business with the seller again in the future! So. My old fridge finally went and I will have a new one delivered. The company that I buy the new refrigerator from will tow away my old one. I noticed that I don’t have any type of “shutoff” behind my refrigerator for the water line. When I checked my basement I noticed that there is a single shut off for my entire bathroom + cooling water line.

My problem is that in order to remove my old fridge it has to be disconnected, thus disconnecting it from the water line and in turn putting my bathroom out of order. Is there an easy way to fix this (I googled around and saw mention of a non-piercing saddle value that can be used?) or should I just deal with having all the water shut off during disconnection, removal and reinstallation?

I went to the hardware store and they gave me this. They said it was a bit over the top but it would work. Do you agree with?

If you’re up for it, I would install a valve in the wall while you have the water shut off. When you’re done, you’ll have a separate shut-off for the refrigerator and your bathroom available again. To make it look nice, I would choose a valve box that you mount in the wall:

Saddle seals are very common, but often fail/leak. However, you can install a simple compression-fit solderless shut-off valve in the copper 1/4 inch line anywhere along the length.
