Don’t panic: it happens all the time. A stitch can fall out of your bag, slip when you set your knitting, or pop off the end of your needle when you’re not paying attention. Sometimes it works deep into the fabric, but there’s still good news. It’s fixable!

Common Knitting Mistakes And How To Fix Them

Fixing this problem is actually easier than you think. When you look at your work, the dropped stitch will be hanging very high at the bottom of what looks like a rung of ladder. This ladder rung is the yarn worked from each row that comes out of that dropped stitch. We then pull that lost stitch up the ladder, recreating a stitch on each rung or row. Here’s how to do it.

Mistakes 101: Knitting Too Tight/loose

1. Start by using your left hand needle to pick up the last stitch you see. The right side (“leg”) of the stitch should be in front of the needle. A ladder of yarn worked from rows of stitches hangs above it.

3. You should now have an old stitch and working yarn (ladder) from the row above the dropped stitch on your needle.

4. Insert your right-hand needle into the dropped stitch and pull up the first ladder step on your needle. Just like that, you’ve picked up a stitch for a row! Now repeat. Place your left-hand needle under the next available ladder rung and repeat the above steps to remake the stitch for that row.

5. Continue. Continue to pull that stitch up in each row, reforming the stitch as above until you reach the top. That stitch line may look a little loose, but it reduces visibility as you continue to work and block your work.

How To Prevent And Fix Dropped Stitches In Knitting — New Wave Knitting

Accidental yarn overs or accidentally weaving into the space between stitches can result in extra stitches. An “accidental yarn over” occurs when you bring your yarn to the front of the work (as opposed to the back). Then, when you go to knit the next stitch, the working yarn will go over your needle and create an extra loop on your needle as you make the next stitch.

Sometimes you accidentally knit in the space between two stitches. Above, the needle does not go through the existing stitch, it goes under the yarn worked from the previous row. It also creates an extra seam.

The best way to catch extra stitches is to look at your fabric regularly to spot any unusual looking holes or places where the stitch doesn’t look right. Above is the accidental yarn as seen from the purl side. Also, count your stitches regularly. If you add extra stitches, your count will increase.

The best way to fix an excess stitch depends on where it is. If an extra stitch is added in the last one to two rows, the easiest solution is to pull the extra stitches off your needle. The yarn worked in one to two rows is a little loose and you may have a stitch that looks big, but it’s better than a big hole.

Fixing Basic Yarn Over Mistakes

If you’re a perfectionist and the offending extra stitch is recent, you can backstitch through the stitch (this is called “tinking”) to reach the offending stitch. You do this by inserting your left-hand needle under the last completed stitch (see above) and pull out the working yarn as you transfer the stitch from the right-hand needle back to your left.

And what if the offending extra stitching happened a long time ago? You may want to rip your knitting apart until you remove the offending stitch. Take your work off the needles and lay it somewhere flat. Slowly work the yarn out of the stitches until you undo the extra stitch.

After the knitting is out comes the knitting. You should have the right half or “leg” of the stitch in front of the needle. If a stitch breaks through another row, don’t worry – put the last visible stitch on the needle, note its position, and continue. Once you’ve picked up the entire row of stitches, go back to the dropped stitch position. Use your new technique to pick up stitches that have fallen from above.

If you want to get rolling with this lovely new craft, a great option is to knit two stitches together into one stitch, which will bring your stitch count up to the correct number.

Common Knitting Mistakes That Beginners Make And How To Fix Them

By joining two stitches over the extra stitch on the bottom, you’ll end up with a hole in your fabric. But this is your first project, after all, and mistakes show that your work is lovingly handcrafted.

The biggest cause of twisted stitches (see above) is when the picked up stitch is placed on the needle the wrong way (front of the left leg) or you knit the stitch backwards. The best way to catch this is to watch your knitting often. Every row or two, take the opportunity to look at the fabric and see how the stitches are falling.

Fix a twisted stitch by “tinking” or returning to the offending stitch by removing what you’ve knitted. You can also stop above the twisted stitch. Place any stitches on top of it and pull out the offending stitch (see photo above). Then, pick up the dropped stitch.

New knitters hold their yarn tightly and for the same reason they knit at the tips of their needles (see above). If you’re knitting on the tips, you’re basically making your new stitches smaller than the size of your needles because you’re knitting on the narrow side. Then, when you push your new itty-bitty stitch onto the rest of the needle, it will be extra tight.

When your knitting stitches are very sensitive to the needle and you have a hard time moving them back and forth, this is the best indicator that you are knitting too tightly.

To avoid this, the first step is to relax—drop your shoulders and take deep breaths. Try starting with larger needles in the beginning, as they are easier to work with. Size 10 needles are great for beginners. Choose bamboo or wood repeaters that hold the yarn a little better than slipperier metal needles.

Finally, make sure each stitch goes all the way to the fat part of the needle before you start your next stitch. This practice results in more even stitches and more relaxed tension.
