How To Upgrade Ram On Lenovo Laptop

How To Upgrade Ram On Lenovo Laptop – The oldest computer model in my stable is the Lenovo ThinkPad T430 (pictured above). Released in 2012, it’s a business workhorse powered by a 2.6GHz dual-core i5-3230M processor (good for writing TPS reports and even running old 3D games) that is still issued to worker bees in offices everywhere. I purchased mine in 2013 in lieu of a payment owed to me from a deadbeat and it has served as a yeoman’s service ever since as a backup machine for tasks that specifically require Windows or Linux.

It comes with a stock 4GB of RAM, which meant I encountered some limitations, especially with heavier development tools like Visual Studio and Android Studio, the Camtasia video capture and recording tool, and to a lesser extent, graphic design and audio instruments. It’s time for the most effective and versatile computer upgrade: increasing RAM!

The T430 uses two PC3-12800 SO-DIMMs at 1600 MHz and supports up to 16 GB of memory. I ordered a pair from NewEgg for under $100 with two-day free shipping. The DIMMs arrived via FedEx on Friday morning, and like any geek with a new tech toy, I pulled out my set of tiny computer screwdrivers and began installing them as soon as they arrived.

The first step was to remove the battery. ThinkPads of that era (I’m not sure about today’s) followed the old school philosophy regarding batteries and kept them external and easy to replace:

I remembered seeing a RAM upgrade on one of these computers years ago, so I knew that the RAM slot was located on the bottom of the machine, just under the center panel…

…until you realize there’s only one RAM slot. When I saw this, I looked around, made sure there was only one RAM slot under that panel, and then checked the T430’s online specs. It is written there

The second RAM slot, which holds the factory-installed RAM, is located under the keyboard and requires a little more effort to reach. I’m guessing Lenovo engineers expected that most users would buy a single DIMM to expand their computer’s RAM and install it in a more accessible slot on the bottom of the computer.

Even if you don’t plan to add or remove RAM from the more easily accessible lower section, you’ll still have to open the center panel at the bottom of the device to access the RAM below the keyboard. This is because there are two screws inside the center panel that need to be removed to get under the keyboard:

These two screws secure the keyboard, and if they are in place, you will not be able to access the RAM slot underneath.

Once you remove these two screws, you can remove the keyboard. Gently lift it up, starting with the edge closest to the trackpad. In this process I used a metal ruler, being careful not to scratch the case:

Lift up the keyboard. You will see that it is connected to the motherboard with a short cable. To the left of where the ribbon cable connects to the motherboard is a thin piece of dark, slightly translucent plastic; The RAM slot is located underneath:

To make it easier to plug in the RAM, I disabled the keyboard. You may not have to do this to insert RAM, but it was pretty simple:

With the RAM installed, I reversed my steps, fired up the ThinkPad, and tested my RAM in an interesting way: by giving Cortana my voice. Here is her answer:

Success! ThinkPad is back in action and ready for development. In a short time when the RAM is exhausted, I have found that Visual Studio, Android Studio and Camtasia work great, and video performance also improves (my model has integrated graphics, which depends on the system RAM).
