Gps Gadgets For Adventurers: Next-gen Navigation – Garmin Tread brings everything users love about outdoor navigation and communication into one device. That’s fine for some, but not all.
Most people use GPS in some way, shape, or form these days, especially when traveling. There are many GPS options, from the ubiquitous Google Maps to subscription-based mobile apps like onX Offroad, and stationary units like Garmin’s.

Speaking of which, Garmin is a well-known name in the GPS industry and was – and arguably still is – one of the most widely used brands of stationary GPS devices. But with almost every cell phone coming with some sort of mapping app, why do people still opt for a standalone unit?
Getting Started With In Car Gps For Beginners
Garmin is doubling down on the fact that travelers, over-the-roaders, and off-roaders will want to buy the latest generation of its off-road GPS units, this time called the ‘Tread Overland Edition’.
The first version, simply called the Overlander, had a 7-inch display, preloaded with off-road maps, and the ability to pair with a separate Garmin inReach satellite connector. The new Tread Overland Edition – comes in different sizes, has different features, and most importantly, it has built-in inReach.
The fact that Tread has inReach integration means that there is no need to connect a separate satellite device. And unlike the inReach, the Tread has an important SOS button built in for emergencies, too. As with any inReach, you’ll need a subscription to its satellite services.
But for those venturing into the backcountry without cell service, inReach can truly be a lifesaver.

With so many mobile mapping apps out there today, we wanted to know why someone would choose this unit over a smartphone, so we reached out to Garmin for a comment.
“Hardware is the big differentiator,” Garmin’s product manager, Don Schmidt, said. Unlike smartphones, Tread devices are purpose-built for rugged, off-road use. They can handle weather, dust, and heat. They also come with a secure closure and a magnetic lock to keep them secure inside your car.”
Schmidt told us that Tread is loaded with private owner information, public lands, iOverlander points, camp reserves, and more. It uses turn-by-turn navigation using OpenStreetMap (OSM) and USFS Vehicle Use Maps.
Perhaps most interestingly, the Tread offers a unique approach based on the size and weight of your cargo while on the road. In addition to a downloadable bird’s-eye satellite image that shows the driver a bird’s-eye view above the map, this helps give them a better sense of the area they’re driving through.
Five Reasons You Need A Garmin Inreach
Unlike the previous Garmin Overlander, the Tread is available in three sizes: 5.5-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch Tread XL versions. The small unit is a sport for powersports (UTV) customers.
Our sample unit was the 8-inch model. The bright screen has great contrast and crisp, clean images. Those familiar with the Garmin GPS interface will be equally familiar with its UX.
Unlike previous Overlanders, this one has no voice recognition. However, it will do things like connect your phone for calls or even play music via Bluetooth connection.
The unit itself is IP67 water resistant, so you don’t have to worry too much about getting wet or dusty if you’ve been in an open top vehicle like a UTV, Jeep, or similar.
Electronics & Gear Essentials Checklist
Power up the Tread (the power button on the back can be tricky to find) and you’re greeted with a beautiful screen. The basic displays on the screen include speed, different timekeeping parameters, and tons of optional displays including things like zoom – a feature I really liked.
My JDM (Japanese Domestic Market) Mitsubishi Delica 4WD van’s speedometer is in kilometers, so having the Tread speed in miles per hour was helpful. I also really appreciated the elevation display, which shows a 30-mile cross section of the up and down road.
This allowed me to plan for rapid acceleration and deceleration – an important feature in a diesel car.
Other fun features include pitch/roll (inclinometer), available bird’s eye view maps (downloadable), and the ability to pair this using the Tread app on your smartphone.
Garmin Announces The Garmin Drive 53 Gps Navigator
This app offers many features, but my favorite is the weather radar overlay. When the phone is connected to the Tread Overland print, it will print weather radar information along your route, allowing you to see areas of storms associated with your trip.
First, you can tell Tread how powerful your car is, and it allows you to choose different difficulties to choose from. Even if you say your rig is not capable, it will give you the option of a normal road, or a scenic road. The more capable your rig is, the more interesting and dirt-friendly your trail can become.
Of course, the easiest way is usually the fastest – think of traveling across the states. But if you choose the fast, beautiful route, you may enjoy the recommendations of the chapter, as it is very good for many off-road routes. It took us a while to realize that you have to choose between the direct paths and the adventures, however.
I tested both route options on a recent trip to Arizona from Oregon at Overland Expo West. While in Northern California, we used Tread’s off-road map layers.

Sure enough, it will feature off-road tracks with green curtains. We would go on trails and old roads, and even take a few of them.
Almost every road we wanted to venture on was there. They stopped and started where the Garmin said. As a fan of not taking the beaten path, I have found the paths I have chosen to be the right ones, which leads to peace of mind.
There were several times she wanted to lead us down paths I wasn’t comfortable walking. In this case, the GPS will return us accordingly.
Although this is the latest and greatest production iteration, there are still some gripes. First, the Tread has a simple 12V dedicated power cord instead of a USB cord.
Satellite, Gps & Gsm Trackers
It may need extra juice, but if you have a single 12V socket, the Tread will be on its own. If they could simply turn it off from the USB port, that would be very welcome.
The Tread can be used wirelessly until the battery runs out, which we found to be about 2 hours and 5 minutes. Unfortunately, the unit will turn off the screen after 30 minutes while on battery. We couldn’t find a way around that.
Our car only has one 12V outlet, so we have to switch between the Tread and the laptop USB adapter and phone charger while we’re working. But the idea of wearing it permanently was irritating.
It’s also not the fastest of the winds. We noticed that after 25 minutes of charging, it was only 11% full.
Using Your Smartphone As A Gps
The high gloss screen looks great. However, you are paying for that in reflection. Sometimes it can be hard to see the screen if the sun is in the wrong place.
Finally, it can be difficult to find the power button on the back of the Tread when it is mounted on the windshield. And when it closes every 30 minutes, you’ll want to find it. Oh, and the wired connection has a sticky pigtail connector that is awkward to use.
That being said, the unit feels substantial, solid, and very well put together. The suction cup mount is also much stronger and more advanced than the old Overlander, as it was prone to constantly falling off the windshield.
However, that is also within Reach. An Elite subscription to onX Maps is $99 a year – that’s a 13-year subscription compared to Garmin Tread.
Revolutionizing Off Roading With Tech & Gadgets
In fact, you don’t get satellite functionality. You also don’t get any hardware, and you have to rely on your smartphone, which is also doing about a hundred other things.
There is no disputing the fact that Tread has more features than Google Maps or Gaia, but you are dealing with technology that cannot be transferred. In other words, if you run out of equipment, you may get a new one.
For mapping apps, you can upgrade to the latest smartphone, and you’ll still have your mapping apps. I’m sure there are firmware updates for the Tread, however.
Garmin has done a great job improving on the previous Overlander GPS model. It made the mountain look good. It made good maps And, the interface is very good. However, the combination of large size and high price is likely to keep many from buying it.
The Best Gps Watch For Navigating The Open Water
In addition, most people already have a smart device – a phone or tablet. The idea that satellite communications are already embedded, however, is a nice touch. For those of us with inaccurate speedometers, I like not to rely on my phone’s GPS speedometer and just use the Tread tool.
